Adolescent Orthodontics

Teen Braces - Salt Lake CityAdolescence: A time of change.

As children transition from early childhood to their teen years, adolescent orthodontics focuses on applying braces for the prevention and/or correction of irregularities of the jaws, teeth and bite.

Orthodontics corrects poor bite mechanics and improves self-confidence. Orthodontic treatment not only creates a beautiful smile but also improves bad bites (malocclusion) that may adversely affect other areas of a teenager’s life. Malocclusion occurs as a result of tooth or jaw misalignment and can affect the way people smile, chew, clean their teeth or feel about themselves. The following problems caused by malocclusion, or bad bite, may be helped with proper orthodontic treatment:

  • Misaligned & crooked teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Missing teeth
  • Extra teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Misaligned or incorrect jaw position
  • Disorders of the jaw joint (TMD)
  • Periodontal problems (gum disease)

The benefits of correcting problems early.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have an initial orthodontic screening at age 7. That’s because potential problems can be identified at this stage and treated before they become big, expensive problems later on. The timing of orthodontic treatment is extremely important and greatly affects treatment approach. We believe in early preventive and growth guidance treatment, but it is never too late to get started.

Dr. Feller uses the latest interceptive methods to correct problems before they progress and require surgical correction. Preventive treatment options may include expansion devices, partial braces and other custom appliances. Use of a soft-tissue laser enables Dr. Feller to expedite treatment by uncovering unerupted teeth, performing gingival (gum) recontouring and/or frenectomy (the reshaping of the tissue that connects the lips, cheek or tongue to the jawbone in cases where it is indicated).

Adolescent treatment

Ultimately, orthodontics does more than make a pretty smile. It creates a healthier, more self-confident teen. If your teen is concerned about the appearance of braces, you can choose cosmetic clear braces. Other options include virtually invisible Invisalign® aligners.

Adult treatment

We can treat and correct orthodontic problems in adults, as well. Because adult teeth move much the same way as children’s teeth, adults can reap the same benefits for straighter, more attractive smiles. With today’s most advanced clear brace options, adults can also straighten their teeth almost invisibly.
